Frequently Asked Questions

How soon can you get me a tutor?

Sometimes as soon as the next day, in cases where your child suddenly panics before a big test and asks for help!  But typically the process takes a little longer.  Once we understand your requirements it will take us a day to contact the tutor who best fits your requirements.  Then we will call you back with our suggested tutor and their availability, and then, if everything looks good, we will take your first hour's payment and you're set to go!  Remember, we guarantee the first session; if you are not delighted with your tutor, we will refund your money, no questions asked.

What are your fees?

That's a fair question and we hate to be a little vague in our response: typically $40/hr for elementary school, $45/hr for high school.  But this can vary -- higher when you need a tutor with specialized skills -- or possibly lower if you require multiple hours of tutoring per week. Our 10-hour SAT or ACT package costs $445, including a Barrons workbook.

Study Skills

When parents call us for a math tutor or reading tutor, they often comment that their child's main problem is with organization and focus.  This becomes particularly apparent as children move from the nurturing environment of elementary school to middle school, when all of a sudden the child has to manage multiple teachers, each with their own teaching styles and homework expectations.

To address this need, In-Home Tutors of Metro Detroit is pleased to offer Study Smarter! -- a 5-week Study Skills program, designed for fourth graders and older. This program, consisting of five weekly 60-minute sessions, covers all the essentials, including time management, organization, note-taking, memorization techniques, Internet research tips and test-taking strategies.

Because all tutoring is one-on-one, our tutors will adapt the program to the age of the child.   Students of all ages run into barriers because of poor study habits.  We can help your high schooler, middle schooler or elementary school child.

The total cost of our Study Smarter! program is $279 (one-on-one), which includes a book -- Helping Kids Get Organized for 4th-6th graders, Study Strategies Made Easy for older students -- as well as a binder full of helpful handouts.

"Homework Coach"

One of our most popular categories of tutor is one we call a “homework coach.”  This is a tutor who works with their students two or more days after school, helping keep them motivated and on-track with all their school subjects. History test coming up?  The tutor will help prepare flash cards and quiz the student the night before the test.  Big English project?  The tutor will help the student plan ahead, prepare an outline, conduct necessary research, and schedule time for reviewing the final product.

For a lot of children -- especially those with learning disabilities and.or AD/HD -- homework is hard! It can be frustrating to both student and parent when assignment take twice as long as other kids, or when every night becomes a battle as parents try to keep their child focused.  A good homework coach can take a lot of this stress out of the home by helping the student stay on top of their work and confident about upcoming tests.  Our best homework coaches are often young college grads who remember what high school was like.  They end being as much a mentor as tutor.
